Trangsrud is a Norwegian surname, which originates from the name of a farm in the Solør region of Hedmark county, an old variant is Trongsrud. In Norwegian 'Trang' means narrow and the '-rud' suffix, which is common in Norwegian farm names from the period AD 1000-1350, means a farm established through the clearing of forest - combined the meaning should be close to:

The first detailed census from 1801, show that the name was limited to the original Trangsrud farm. Censuses from 1865 and beyond, show that the Trangsrud name had spread to other areas in the county and to nearby counties. Towards the end of the 1800s the first Trangsrud emigrants left for USA and Canada. Today there are about 90 individuals with the Trangsrud surname in Norway, and a probably a smaller number living in North America. About half of the Trangsruds in Norway still live in Hedmark county, and the majority of the other half live in the counties of Oslo and Akershus.
